Make Your Own: Brand Mood Board
Here are a few tips to get you started in making your own brand mood board:
Think of your target audience
You know that one person you write your blog for, or design products for? What does she want her life to be like? Capture that in the images and styles you use. Is she a busy mom looking for serenity? Does she desperately want to quit her day job to work at home? Is he already planning his next road trip?
Note that you’re not using images of what her life is like NOW. She doesn’t need that reminder. You want to envision the life he or she is moving TO.
Think of your own style
If you’re designing a brand, think of your personal style. Or if you’re designing for a client, what style are they drawn to? What are the colors, patterns, and mood that call out to you?
Yes, you want a brand that will attract your target audience. But you have to live with it week after week! You don’t want to commit to a brand that you’ll tire of, or worse, will grate on your nerves in a few months.
Choose a few design elements to play with
Gather together some images that will appeal to your audience (and that you like as well). Once you have a good collection to play with, start looking for common elements. Did you happen to pull a lot of photos with certain colors, or patterns? Pay attention to any themes you see!
As you put your brand mood board together, pull out 4-6 colors that match well with the story you’re telling in your images.
Choose 2-3 fonts to include in your board. You can use your blog or business name and tagline, or type out a quote that speaks to your theme.
This is a time for play, not pressure!
Your brand mood board is a playground, not your final brand that you commit to for all time! Experiment, mix and match, try a bunch of different ideas. In fact, do more than one board. Wait a few days and see which one is still calling your name.
